YORK, Maine — York Hospital President Jud Knox is scrambling to prevent what amounts to a $760,000 annual state tax increase on the hospital, as one of the measures Augusta is eying to make up for a $430 million budget shortfall.

...snip

At issue is what is called the “tax and match” system among Maine hospitals. ....

This year, the state is proposing changing the formula and increasing the amount of assessment, or tax, to each hospital.

How about a law requiring the state to pay its hospital bills in full, prior to any further taxation on hospitals? Common Sense, anybody?

According to the article, York Hospital would experience a 49% increase in taxes if this was to proceed, for one year alone. The idea is to lever more matching money out of the feds by taxing the state medical facilities at a higher percentage based on their revenues. For every dollar in hospital tax, the state gets three from the feds.

Why can't Baldaccio and his cronies stick to screwing with something less essential, like trying to gut the lottery, or sell it outright?

Just when one thinks it can't get any worse....

Last time Maine went on a push to leverage money from the Feds, the DHHS lost the money. As near as I remember it was never found. Oh well; it's only money. Plenty more where that came from.

YORK, Maine — Despite multiple visits to Augusta trying to stave off the inevitable, York Hospital President Jud Knox said Monday he was unsuccessful in changing a law that will result in a $760,000 tax increase, due July 1, on the hospital.
....snip

But he's not taking the news sitting down, either.

"We've perhaps not been aggressive enough in the past," he said. "But that's going to change."

Maybe he'll start voting Republican, if he wasn't before.

About time hospitals stopped playing the "we're afraid of Augusta" routine.

I think the Maine Hospital Association supported the higher tax.

Considering the State still owes hospitals millions, isn’t this just a way to take the money in the form of taxes and give if back to them as payment?

The hospitals would be better off left alone and simply told, you will not see your money because the State is broke!

Save the cans in the Cafe, the 5 cent deposit might be the only gift from the State.
