The latest in a long line of these kind of tragedies.
........"The Foxy Lady II did not return home to Stonington on Saturday night as expected...........About 50 people gathered Monday night on the town pier at a candlelight vigil for the missing captain and crewman of the Foxy Lady II!.......
......."The Foxy Lady II was homeported in Gloucester, Mass, according to a press release issued by the Coast Guard. The boat’s last known location was approximately 15 miles north of Provincetown, Mass., the Coast Guard said".......
The Foxy Lady is based in Stonington, and the captain and crewman are from the Island. They go to Gloucester this time of year to fish in areas where they have a better chance to make some money. I am not 100% sure of what they were fishing for, but suspect it was scallops. The waters out around P Town, this time of year, can be very dangerous. The water is relatively shallow, and can become extremely rough with any kind of wind. There was quite a low termprature and that can cause heavy icing on a fishing vessel in any kind of rough seas.
I lost an uncle in one of these kinds of events, when I was 14 yrs old. That was back in Sept 1962, but I have never forgotten the pain the family and friends feel, and it is even worse when you don't really know what happened.
There have been more than a few vessels lost of the Mass coast, trying to fish out there in the winter.
The families have my deepest sympathies, in this troubling time.
