Tell me how to kill a rat or two.

I thought I had a mouse problem in my barn, but upon seeing the bugger this morning, it is a bonafide RAT. I haven't seen any thing like it since moving from Lowell where they were common along the banks of the Merrimack River. I put my cat out there, he saw it, hissed, and they both ran away from each other, so my geriatric cat is officially useless. All I have are mouse traps and they have been tripped before with no results...obviously I now know the traps are too darned small. I cannot use poison because of my animals, and I am unable to leave the property in the foreseeable future to get any other larger traps. Is there something I can rig up in the meantime to safely rid me of these things? I don't mind if they die in the process ;) Thank you in advance for any advice you toss my way.

If you're a good shot - a .22 caliber rifle will work. If not, a Victor brand rat trap with peanut butter bait will do the trick.

Except she can't leave the premises.

I have a friend who fills a 5 gallon can about half full of water, and puts a band of peanut butter a few inches above the water line. Then he rigs up a little ramp for the critters to get to the peanut butter. They dive after it and drown.

He does this for meeses. A larger size version (trash can?) might work for the rats.

The rat traps Scott mentions are inexpensive, available at the hardware store, and should work. If you don't have a gun, or don't want to kill the critter with a spring trap, you could invest $15 for a humane squirrel trap - those are small, and would work for a rat.

However, unless you drive 50 miles and dump said rat in a wasteland, likely the bugger would make its way back to your barn in a jiffy.

Here are two 'recipes' I use around our farm. We definitely have a rat problem because this place used to be a poultry then dairy farm.
You may not have the ingredients handy, though.

1) Juicy Fruit gum. I freeze it, them snap/crumble it into pieces. Rats love it - and yes, for some reason they prefer Juicy Fruit.
(leave it in a place where only they can get at it)
It blocks them up and they go on to the great Rat Hole in the Sky.
No secondary poisoning as far as I can tell. Even the crows around here will not eat the stomach/intestine contents of the dead rat which contains the ingested gum.

2) Mix equal parts of Quikrete and Cornmeal together.
Place in shallow feeding pan. Leave somewhere dry where rain and snow won't react with the Quikrete for obvious reasons
Rats will ingest the entire mix. It solidifies in their stomach/intestines and they too will go on to the great beyond.
No secondary poisoning observed as scavangers will not ingest the 'guts', but leave them untouched.

I've had rats try to get water out of my horse buckets and drown in the process.
Perhaps you can set out a large, deep bucket (or half 55 gal drum if you have one of those plastic ones) of warm/hot water filled within about 6 or more inches from the top.
The rat(s) depending on the size may fall in and drown trying to get to the warm water.

Another thing you might try is taking an empty trash can (large) set a board up to the outside edge as a ramp, place oats or grain in the bottom, like a quart or so that the rat can see and smell them.

The rat may fall into the trash can and be trapped, as they can't climb the slippery sides.
Dispose of as you wish! :P

I see Mel beat me to the trash can idea!

Wow - great advice. Now, if you have any similar ideas for the rats in Augusta, LMD, let us know.

Let's see - mix equal parts Quikrete and crumpled money, leave where only the Democrats can get to it....

I'm afraid in Augusta you'd have to deal with the secondary poisoning that LMD alluded to. The scavengers would not be able to resist...

Too true.

But wait! Maybe the secondary scavengers would be LOBBYISTS!

Two critters with one Quikrete.

Eureka!!

Actually you can use the trappers trick for skunks with said traps, put a brick in the trap before setting it. Once the rat is in the trap, you can tie a rope to the trap and leave it in the bottom of your favorite pond or brook for ½ an hour. One drowned rat...

 Too funny, you two!

I'm fixating on the subject of rat poisoning... and alternatives if you don't have Quikrete, cornmeal or Juicyfruit gum handy.
Fixating on this allows me to ignore everything I have to do outside. It is very cold outside. I don't want to return outside...

Kathy, you might try mixing talcum powder (don't use GoldBond - too pungent) with peanut butter (make talc peanut butter balls). I'd say mix about 2:1 talc to PB. Do you have a piece of old sheetrock/drywall hanging around? You could try grinding up some of the gypsum plaster and mix with peanut butter (gypsum PB balls). If you have any dessicant like Drierite® or those little packettes of stuff that come with stuff which help absorb moisture, you could use that. Blackboard chalk can be used, or plumbline chalk, you could try that. Or I'd even try grinding up some clumping cat litter.

You might try pulverizing some styrofoam into nearly a powder and mixing it with peanut butter. See if the buggers ingest that.

Do you know anyone who takes Coumadin? You didn't hear this from me, but if you do and they can spare a tablet or two you could carefully grind some up and mix it with a little peanut butter or cheese....but, you didn't hear that from me............................

The further you move to the right, in your choice, the more assured you are of getting rid of any rat you may ever encounter.

Bob's illustration would certainly work on the Giant Rats in Augusta, that much is for sure and certain.

LMD - I hereby name Juicy Fruit as the OFFICIAL AMG Fiscal Gum, henceforth.

Every time we go to Augusta, let's all offer our least favorite legislators a full pack, or at least a stick.

They won't get the joke, but we certainly will!

(ps - Quikrete optional, but not recommended, condoned, or approved by AMG).

Memories...... of my ex trying to shoot rats. All he managed to do was ventilate the barn. They are surprisingly quick on their paws.

What you need is a big mouse trap. Being a PETA person, this trap would allow you to relocate the rat rather than terminating the charming critter.

Catherine
As "employer" of two RAT terriers and one Border Terrier - both breeds known for their alledged vermin eradication ability... I can tell you a couple of things about their "work" ethic (particular the ratty guys):

If it's 80 degrees and humid outside in the summer months, "we" don't work. It's too hot and YOU can't make us. The Terrier's Local 479 says we don't have to and Mom can't make us.
We will lie in front of the fan INSIDE the house, thank you very much.

If it's 45 degrees or below outside..."we" don't work and you can't make us (see reason above). "We" will however reluctantly do our duty outside as good dogs, but don't push your luck...It's too C-O-L-D, It's too W-I-N-D-Y. And frankly, "you" had better go out and shovel a path for us if the snow cover is greater than 4 inches... otherwise we will call the humane society and claim abuse.
We prefer to lie under our blankets INSIDE the house, on the old stuffed chair.

Besides, our older canine "sibling" is a big mutt and HE is the one that catches & dispatches the rats. He works FOR US. We prefer to watch HIM do the work when HE wants to. Otherwise, forget it. He has other things to do...

It's all a conspiracy, I tell you.....

You need to be very careful shooting even a 22 in a confined area. It's pretty easy to shoot through a wall, and bullets ricochet easier than you might think. They used to sell 22 "rat shot", which we used in our barns and cellars. When you can leave the property you should pick some up. Excellent for rats and squirrels. Make sure you wear safety glasses.

Cool! Do they have it for a 30-06? I bet a 30 caliber Carbine with shot loads would be a great rat killer!

Catherine,
For shame!!!!!!!!
I've covered their eyes so they can't read what you've written...

We refer to ours as the "mini marshmallows", for obvious reasons.

If you can bear another tale - My father used to raise racing pigeons when he was a young boy (also for squab). In fact I have a picture of him from 1930 holding his prized racer...I digress.

Anyway, he tells of a man who would go around the county with his scrappy little rat terrier to rid barns and coops of vermin. The dog in short order would dispatch any he could find in, around and under any building or flight cage. He was truly a 'working dog'.

I had high hopes for mine. They came from good 'parents'; both proven 'ratters'...or so I was told. To this day I blame myself for allowing them as young pups to watch the older mutt dog dispatch a rat and bring it to them.
I believe that is where their welfare entitlement attitude began.
"We won't work for food" is their motto.

Not if they have canola oil, soy oil, white bleached flour, salt other than Himalyan sea salt, or anything else that will reduce my PH below 9.

Are you within urban limits? If so, the .22 or .45 rat shot is out. If you're beyond city limits, blast away. Aside from the more reliable traps combined w/ peanut butter and/or watery depths, the rat shot is your best bet.

Don't bother with the .22 rat shot. All it will do is pi$$ him off. Use regular .22's.(Yellowjackets) We had an old single shot .22 that was always just inside the barn door. I got so good at it as a kid I could hit a rat in the head the whole length of the chicken barn. I rarely missed. All it takes is practice. Always had PLENTY of cats around too but you have to "thin" them out every fall and that is illegal now. Shotgun Fun...LOL

Earl and pmh, if you don't like the ratshot, what would you think of a nice air pellet gun in this situation?

Nothing too fancy, a Beeman 750 (600 fps) or something?
