A new law geared to save taxpayers millions of dollars by placing a 24-month lifetime cap on state funding for MaineCare patients using methadone to treat their opiate addiction goes into effect Jan. 1.
There are 4,760 drug-addicted Mainers receiving methadone maintenance treatment to fight opiate addiction, and 3,119 of those — more than 65 percent — are on public assistance under MaineCare, the Medicare program for the state, Martins said..
It's about time. Why should we pay for junkies to get a lifetime high? Per the story, in 2010, we spent $9MM on methadone treatments and another $7MM to pay for transportation costs for the "patients" to get to treatment centers. That's both obscene and absurd.
