Senator Kennedy: "Not in MY back yard!"

Environmental groups have launched an aggressive advertising and lobbying campaign to persuade Democrats to abandon Kennedy and back a promising source of renewable energy. If the wind farm becomes a reality, advocates say, it could provide three-fourths of the Cape and Islands' energy needs and could set an example for the nation.

Latest email is pitting another key Dem. against Kennedy's maneuver to have the State approve siting, and Kennedy losing trying to tack it onto a Coast Guard appropriation.

.....Yah, sure! I'll put my money on Teddy having final say on this issue.

Maybe they could tell the Amphibious Senator (thanks to John Frary for that one!) that the windmill farm is intended to produce only the finest branded malt whisky.

BINGO! Instant Kennedorial Endorsement!

I wonder if I installed one of these in my backyard if it would make enough power to run my house, and I wonder how they stand up to snow and ice.

I know that along Route 77 in Cape Elizabeth, there is a home that has one of these power generating windmills in their yard.

Be careful, he could cut a deal which puts them on barges to be anchored off of K-port every summer...or has each one monitored 24/7 to make sure no birds are killed...or.???

They can put fifty dozen off Kennebunk immediately. They can join the Jet Skis and the cigarette boats, and the lobstah boats, and if they take out a few seagulls, gosh, wouldn't that be a horrible thing??

Maybe we need to place a bunch of them on top of high-rises in big cities.

Those being proposed are not designed for rooftops or urban siting; these are: http://www.turby.nl/

In the current climate, Kennedy will lose this fight. Best he can do is a more agreeable ( to him ) compromise.

Mmmm... well, maybe. I know the Cape pretty well and the general sentiment down there among the Beautiful People is that the wind farm is an abomination (they love wind power, and would support it just about anywhere else they don't have to look at it). The opposition has the local papers in their back pockets and is well-financed by wealthy landowers who are worried about their views.

If, as you say, the current climate is such that Kennedy will lose the fight, then that's good. But I don't expect him to compromise or be more agreeable. First, it's not in his nature, and his protestations to the contrary notwithstanding this is about protecting his own interests. Second, if he's likely to lose anyway he has nothing to gain by compromising - he can still be be the obstructionist bastitch he's always been and tell his constituents he went down swinging.

The Kennedy clan has been caught lying and scare mongering on this. There is no longer any perception that this isn't anything but pure NIMBYism. Kennedy will get support for federal measure to block from Senators and Congressmen that he supports....any other federal political critter who has a gripe and a vindictive streak will block his efforts just to poke a stick in Kennedy's eye.

Republicans need a coup in alternative energy to add some small measure of credibility to their commitment to alternative energy. This project, and the way the Kennedy's have played it, is made to order if theyw ould just play it.

About the only way Kennedy is going to be successful in blocking it is if he lends his support to something like ANWR drilling. Something needs to be done on energy, either we go after more fossil in the ground or we use this project to break the NIMBY gridlock on alternatives...cause if it's good enough for the beautiful people and the Kennedy's then it is good enough for everyone else.

The Republicans actually have a very strong hand in this issue and can parlay it up to broad support for Bush's latest stated energy agenda rather easily in the current climate. Done right it may even put a hefty chink in Kennedy's electorial armour for a serious challange down the road.

Maybe the local arts council can offer to let people "adopt" a windmill, and have it painted in a fetching pastel color of their choice! In return, of course, for a sizeable donation to some worthy charity.

Just think how beauteous that would be to look at - all those gorgeous pale pink and light orange and pale yellow windmills, against the setting sun and sky.

Hmmmmmm........................

Where's Christo when we need him????

He's busy putting a roof over the Arkansas River. Get in line.

A compromise was worked out between Sen. Kerry's spokesperson, Thereza Heinz and Ted Kennedy.

The windmills would be allowed but only if they are underwater by at least 50 ft. below the surface.

Potential Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is an outspoken opponent of this project and would likely use the veto power he would be given if this passes.

What say you?

If given the opportunity Romney will veto it. He won't be given the chance.
