Brent great job.
Super job, Brent! Keep up the good work!Just to back you up, I sent the press release to Susan Gendron (DOE Commissioner), and an email to Dr. O'Neill, asking that the faculty members who acted unwisely be reprimanded and reminded of their responsibilities.
Brent -- Good job. You are handiling this appropriately. My comments in the other thread should not be read to defend the teachers actions. I just don't think conservatives should act like liberals and play the victim or make a federal case out of every wrong. I do think this is a good opportunity for the administration to remind teachers of what rights to free speech students have in schools. It appears that is where this is headed which is a good thing.
Brent look in PM
One for the good guys :D
BrentIt is ashame that teachers acting in such a way causes you to get some flack.I see that the administrators back you and keep the public posted in regards to the sit down and talking that the teachers receive.Brent, also do not forget to contact me when you have a free minute or two.
Brent, I forwarded the press release to Michelle Malkin, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham, so some of their people may be calling you, we'll see.
When my daughter was attending an all-girls Catholic school during the last election I heard stories about teachers at that school saying that the reason that teen-aged depression was on the rise was because there was a Republican in the White House; that the girls should not bother with the college application process because Bush was going to draft them all to fight in the desert; girls routinely were graded down for submitting papers with conservative viewpoints; National Honor Society nominations were denied to more vocally conservative students; etc. What Mr. Bowen is experiencing is rampant throughout our educational system. I get the feeling you couldn't fill a classroom with all the conservative teachers in Maine high schools.
My favorite namesake raising hell again! Great Job, Brent! When I met with David Horowitz last week he wanted to work with us to follow up the Academic Bill of Rights bill from last session with one for K-12. Be sure to write down everything that happens, take names, etc. We'll need them when you lead off the testimony in support of a K-12 Bill of Rights bill!Great job!Steve Bowen
We need more Brents in the world. :)
I received a response back from the principal, Dr. O'Neill, and there are several things I think should be posted, just to get the other side of the story. He said that:- they were never contacted about the problem, or before the press release was sent out.
- there was only one teacher that questioned Brent, and it was only to see if he got permission to hand out the paper. After he got permission, there was no problem.
- teachers did throw away his newspaper, but this was after lunch, and they were the duty monitors, cleaning up before the next lunch time. But there was no malicious intent.
- under state law, no teacher can suspend a student, only an administrator. No teacher threatened Brent with suspension.
- they were one of the first schools to endorse both the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats, and they support all points of view in the school as long as they are not pornographic, etc.I thought in the interest of fairness this information should be posted.
But do they tell the truth?
Every once in awhile a young man or woman comes along and gives me hope for the future. Thanks Brent.

LEWISTON - Parents and local Republicans flooded the school system with calls and e-mails Tuesday after College Republicans released a statement charging the high school violated a student's right to free speech.School officials say they didn't do anything of the kind. The College Republicans say school officials are avoiding the truth. Each side is calling the other unprofessional.

I talked with Sen. Collins' office and Sarah said they will be looking into this matter. She will keep in touch as things unfold.
I figure they will wait until hearing both sides before going to far. I don't know the school system and the works of it since I don't have kids that attend Lewiston schools. But if Brent was given permission to continue is seems like the Admin is reasonable.
Let's hope they are looking into the matter openly and not in a bias way.
Now that there support for Brent coming from higher ups there isn't going to be any back lash for it.

True or untrue?
Brent, I just want to say good job for your efforts at LHS. I am a 2002 alumni of that school and currently attending college at USM. Nice to hear students doing something important at that school. So far this year unfortunately I have not been able to get into our group due to the fact I am going through a major career change plus with midterms coming up. Feel free to send me a private e-mail; I am just wondering on whom these teachers are. I promise to keep the information confidential, however if you feel uncomfortable releasing that info, then don't worry.
Keep up the good work.Peter D. Stone, Portlandpeter.firstname.lastname@example.org
What ever happened to the ABC's? When did schools become a political platform for either side. I know the issue of schools is a political platform, but the actual schools themselves? During school hours? I think it is time BOTH sides stop this. Let kids actually learn how to read and write again (not saying Brent can't, but a lot of kids can't). Or at least do it in a Government class and allow all sides to be heard.
Also, a press release was probably a little premature if you had not discussed it with the Principal yet.

School administrations have been passing out Time Magazine propaganda for 20 years as part of the mandated curriculum.

From my experience...oh, I'd say from about 1963 on or thereabouts.Considering how many flaming liberal draft-dodging outspoken dirtbag teachers I had in high school in the early-mid seventies, I'd say schools as political platforms were well-established by then.Just my not-so-humble opinion.

When the democrat teachers union adopted Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto plank of taking control of the public schools.
Frankly, this sounds to me like 'much ado about nothing', and I'm very much a supporter of the 1st amendment. I will await the truth before passing final judgement though.charlie
I read this thread a few times and can not figure out what is going on. What happened in the high school?

Absolutely nothing. But it was enough to generate two days worth of educator bashing on AMG, so it was worth it.
Less Taxes, here is a link that describes what happened:[url=http://www.asmainegoes.com/ubb-scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=28...
Shouldn't that be "Fewer Taxes"? ;)

Listen Pal, that’s just not the way we do things here at AMG… To save you further embarrassment, allow me to enlighten you…First, pick a side. Don’t post without bashing someone (usually someone in the media please).Second, you’re supposed to have already passed judgment prior to coming here. This should have been on the forum rules you signed.Third, truth is optional here at AMG. The only thing that matters is that you bash the “other side†as being evil, in the most arrogant and egotistical manner possible. And finally, don’t believe the intellectual physicists that post here. Every coin has only one side. All claims of this fictitious coin with two sides are made by uneducated scientists (total bunk) and perpetrated by the main stream media. Every coin has only one side. Our side. Please don’t come back here preaching your logic, level-headedness, truth-hunting and common sense again. Come back when you think you’ve learned enough of how we do things here at AMG. There are many fine examples of these very principles on this very post. Others can be found in anything with “Shehan†or “TABOR†in the heading.
