One key element in successful self government is getting people to show up at meetings where important decisions are made. One way to do that is to let people know about the meeting BEFORE it happens. The following is the most current information I could find. If you know when and where your town or county caucus is being held, please post it.

Please note that the Androscoggin County caucus will be held on February 11th. I had previously listed it as being on the 4th, which was in error.

Up above is listed the "Farmington town caucus." In fact it is the FRANKLIN COUNTY CAUCUS that will be held on the 4th at Mt. Blue High School at 2 PM. This will be followed by the Lincoln Day Dinner at 6. between the caucus and dinner will be speeches by notables, and entertainment. A pie auction will follow the dinner. Cost for the 4 to 6 session and the dinner will be $15.00. The dinner will be buffet style and promises to be very fine.

So will the same Republicans who object to the state convention being held on a Saturday and Sunday also decline to participate in the Feb. 5 caucuses?

Some towns will provide printed voter lists. Some only provide disks. We were unable to download the disk provided in 2010. It was unreadable on either a Mac or Dell. It took my wife three days to decipher it and make a list. It was possible only because we knew some of the names and roads. The data was in one huge long line.

This year the town did the same thing. It is even worse. It can't be imported using Excel. Other towns have the same problem. I found a town clerk who was able to import the data and print it using Adobe Acrobat Reader. I hope this is helpful to somebody else. The state is unwilling or unable to name the program they use to create the voter list. The file is called "Voter Vault", but what program is used to create the file? This should be available under FOIA.

Update: Mission accomplished. It is not possible to open the disk using the 2010 instructions. Following the 2012 instructions as written won't get you the data either, but my wife is an Excel expert. Using long experience with Excel it is possible to access the data. I have asked her to supplement the state instructions so the casual computer user could open the disks provided by some towns.

Would someone know the answer to this question? If a young person goes to the Caucus, that is not yet 18, but will be 18 by the November election, are they allowed to register to vote at the Caucus? I thought I heard that this is allowed.

Maine caucuses beginning Sunday
By David Ramsay

February 04, 2012 2:00 AM

YORK, Maine — Sunday's Republican caucus in York marks the first of the local caucuses in the southern Maine Seacoast area during this year's presidential election season.

Jane Clark, Eliot's Republican Committee vice chairwoman, said it is important for GOP voters to attend the caucuses to register their feelings about whom they want to be their candidate in the presidential election. She also underscored that it is an opportunity to vote for officers of the town committee, delegates to the state convention and election clerks.

Full article includes locations, dates, times of several York County caucuses - both Republican and Democrat

Maine’s Voting Contest: A Lazy Caucus in Vacationland
By Elizabeth Hartfield

Maine hosts a “lazy caucus.”

The state’s Republican Party requested...Maine’s counties.., municipalities hold their caucus events sometime between Feb. 4-Feb. 11. The majority of the state’s events have been slated for Feb. 11, ...a couple of towns have already caucused.

Twenty- four delegates are at stake.., but none will be awarded on Saturday. Turnout was low in 2008 — about 1 percent of the voting eligible population.

...Maine is very much a “purple state.”

So, this GOP presidential preference poll is NOT the actual caucus results; really doesn't count for anything except bragging and momentum. // Sat 11 Feb 16:29 via web

Ah -- "Bragging and Momentum."

Beats "Bread and Circuses," anyday.

************

York County had an AMAZING caucus today in Sanford; standing room only, complete with a visit from Mitt Romney. Great speeches from many candidates and their representatives, and stellar musical performances of ballads and the National Anthem.

Awesome job by everyone who organized the event! It was great to see old friends, and meet new ones.

Thanks to all those who worked, volunteered, performed, and attended!

Kennebunk had a great turnout, and we easily filled the delegate roster for the GOP Convention.
